Relocation Transport Modes and Process

At Ship My Cars Canada, we ship passenger vehicles to areas in Alberta and Quebec, such as:

  • Cars and SUVs
  • Crossovers and Minivans
  • Light-Duty Trucks (F150s, Tacomas, etc.)
  • Heavy-Duty Trucks (F350s, 3500s, etc.)

Please be informed that we may not ship vehicles that are more than 7 feet tall. To learn what steps to take when scheduling transports, let us know if your vehicle is lifted or oversized.

What to Expect

In the moving process, vehicles are minimally driven in certain cases. Make sure to leave at least a third of the gas tank’s contents before shipping. This way, road vehicles in transit could be:

  • Driven on or off transport trucks
  • Driven in or out of railway cars
  • Moved in terminals before loading
  • Driven to and from terminals to destinations

Delivery Modes and Insurance Coverage

We use driving services to facilitate door pickups and deliveries in certain cities, including Toronto, Calgary, and Edmonton. This service is more cost-effective than door pickups and delivery using transport trucks or tow trucks.

When shipping vehicles, you enjoy car carrier insurance coverage. However, some restrictions apply, and not every type of damage is paid for since coverage can vary between the different modes of transport, such as those for:

  • Open Trucks
  • Enclosed Trucks
  • Trains

How old vehicles are can also impact insurance coverage. Although it is not required, we recommend having your own insurance on the vehicle you are shipping.

Shipping Prerequisites

Before dropping off-road vehicles for moving to remote locations, make sure that they are clean inside and outside. Gas tanks must contain at least 1/3 of their full capacity. Make certain that e-brakes and foot brakes are in working condition.

All tires must have enough air and be in good condition. Unless authorized, vehicles must not contain personal items. Only spare tires and jacks are allowed to be included.
Kindly inform us if your car has undergone any kind of modifications, including:

  • Alcohol Locks
  • Ignition Codes
  • Ignition Fobs

Remove racks installed outside of the vehicle. Items inside of the vehicle weighing up to 150 pounds may be allowed, but personal items placed in the front passenger seat are disallowed.

Items placed in back seats and in open trunks (SUVs and Station Wagons) must not be packed above the bottom of the vehicle’s windows. In some cases, personal items may not be allowed owing to restrictions with our trucking agents.

Please discuss this with us beforehand to confirm items allowed for inclusion in the shipment. Although insurance is recommended for your vehicle, it is not required since transport insurance is already included with our shipping service.

Be informed nevertheless that personal items are shipped at the owner's risk and are not insured.

Trailer Transport Methods

After vehicles are driven onto transport trailers, these are secured by one or two different methods depending on the trailer configuration. A tire strap is the most popular method used. Tire straps go over all the wheels and secure the vehicle to the trailer.

Other than the tires, no part of the trailer or the strap touches any part of your vehicle. In some cases, chains are used to secure the frame of your vehicle to the car transport trailer.

Think Proactively When Booking

We recommend booking about a week or two when shipping your vehicle since there has been a steady increase in shipments over the past few years. Early bookings allow us to reserve a spot on the truck/train around the time you want to drop it off.

Book and drop off vehicles at your earliest convenience upon receiving the terminal address and hours of operation from your shipping representative. Keep in mind that cars or any vehicle may not be shipped right away.

The possibility exists that the next few shipments have already been booked up and could wait at the terminal for more than a week.

Storage fees for vehicles in our main terminals usually don’t apply. However, make sure to check with us before dropping vehicles off. Some terminals that we use in smaller cities are owned by towing companies that may charge small daily fees.

Save on the Terminal-to-Terminal Method

The terminal-to-terminal method is the least expensive car shipping option. This requires vehicle owners to drop off and pick up cars at terminals in the origin and destination cities.

In towns and smaller cities where we don’t have a main terminal, vehicle owners can meet up with the transport truck crew at an easily accessible location, such as a truck stop or a dealership.

Door-to-Door Options

For door-to-door deliveries, we pick up vehicles at your door. Aboard smaller transport trucks, such as flatbed tow trucks, we transport loads directly to a terminal or a towing yard.

In turn, your vehicle gets loaded onto a rail car or a larger transport truck. To arrange door pickups, we need at least 3-5 days’ notice. Vehicles could also be picked up by a separate driving service and driven to the terminal.

Check Service Details

Please be informed that door-to-door services are not available in all locations. For more information, kindly check service details with a representative. Let us know about this when booking your shipment so that we can include the service in the price quote.
